Ontazolast is a positive allosteric modulator of the benzodiazepine site of the GABA A receptor. It is used in research to study protein interactions and to improve our understanding of the function of ion channels. Ontazolast is not intended for use as a therapeutic agent, but it can be used as a research tool.
Ontazolast binds to the benzodiazepine site on GABA A receptors which are activated by GABA, leading to increased chloride conductance and hyperpolarization of the cell membrane. This inhibits neuronal firing and reduces seizure frequency.
