5-Geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin is a coumarin derivative that is used as a biological probe to study the genotoxic effects of chemicals. It has been shown to induce necrotic cell death in HL-60 cells, which may be due to its ability to interact with DNA and interfere with cellular metabolism. 5-Geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin also has chronic kidney toxicity, immunosuppressive properties, and suppresses suppressor genes. This compound also has antiinflammatory properties and may inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species. 5-Geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin can act as a precursor or pharmacological agent for other derivatives through an oxidation reaction. 5GOC has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by causing mitochondrial membrane potential collapse and inhibiting protein synthesis in cancer cells.
