Pregnenolone sulfate sodium salt is a neuroprotective agent that has been shown to inhibit the progression of atrial and renal proximal sclerosis, as well as demyelination and axonal degeneration. Pregnenolone sulfate sodium salt also protects against apoptosis by inhibiting the activation of caspases. This agent has been shown to have anticoagulant effects in vitro, which may be due to its ability to inhibit thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. The mechanism behind these effects is unclear, but may be due to inhibition of thrombin binding or inhibition of protease activity. Pregnenolone sulfate sodium salt also inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins and nitric oxide, which are inflammatory mediators involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus type 2, and hypertension.
