Rutaretin is a natural coumarin derivative that has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in mice. It is proposed that this compound exerts its effect by inhibiting the enzyme phosphatidate phosphohydrolase and thus preventing the hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine, leading to an increase in intracellular levels of glycerol-3-phosphate. Rutaretin also has neuroprotective properties and can be used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis. This drug binds to amyloid beta plaques from Alzheimer's disease and suppresses their formation, suggesting it may have therapeutic potential for treating Alzheimer's disease.
