Xylopic acid is a natural phenolic compound found in the bark of the xylopia tree, which has been used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes in China for over 1,000 years. Xylopic acid is an antioxidant that inhibits inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α. It also inhibits 2-adrenergic receptors, which are involved in the regulation of intestinal motility. Xylopic acid has minimal toxicity and can be used to treat bowel diseases without causing side effects.
