VU591 is a drug that has been developed to treat chronic kidney disease. It is a vasopressin type 1 receptor (V1R) agonist, which increases the synthesis of nitric oxide and prostaglandins in the vascular system, thereby lowering blood pressure and improving renal function. VU591 has been shown to be effective in animal models of cardiovascular diseases and it has been used in clinical trials for human subjects with type 1 diabetes mellitus or hypertension. VU591 acts as a natriuretic agent by binding to the G-protein coupled receptors on the surface of cells in various tissues and increasing intracellular cAMP levels.
