Dihydrexidine is a peptide that can act as an activator or inhibitor of ion channels. It was first synthesized in 1984 and has been widely used as a research tool for studying the function of ion channels in cell biology, pharmacology, and neurology. Dihydrexidine binds to receptors on the surface of cells, activating them by increasing their permeability to ions. It also binds to ligand-gated ion channels and prevents them from opening, thereby inhibiting the flow of ions through the channel.
Dihydrexidine is classified as an inhibitor because it blocks ligand-gated ion channels by binding to the receptor site on the outside of the cell membrane. This prevents ligands such as acetylcholine from binding to these sites and opening up ion channels that allow sodium ions into the cell. The inhibition of these channels leads to reduced transmission of signals along nerve cells which causes paralysis in insects and muscle spasms in mammals.
