MA242 is a sesquiterpene lactone that has anticancer activity and is used for the treatment of cancer. It inhibits the production of energy in cells by inhibiting the enzyme adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthase, which is involved in ATP synthesis. This inhibition leads to cell death in tumor cells and slows down or stops tumor growth. MA242 also has an anti-inflammatory effect and can be used to treat chronic viral infections such as herpes zoster (shingles). MA242 is also being studied for its potential to prevent pancreatic cancer. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human sarcoma cells and reduce inflammation in experimental models of inflammatory diseases.
