SBI-553 is a peptide that binds to the GABAA receptor and inhibits its function. This effect on the GABA receptor is used as a research tool in pharmacology and cell biology. SBI-553 has been shown to be an inhibitor for the α4β2 subtype of the GABAA receptor, but does not inhibit other types of GABA receptors. The binding of SBI-553 to this type of GABAA receptor causes relaxation of smooth muscle cells in vitro, which may lead to a potential therapeutic use for SBI-553 in treating asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
