<p>Etofylline is a potent antagonist of histamine receptors. It has been shown that etofylline binds to the H1 receptor and blocks the action of histamine on smooth muscle cells, leading to bronchodilation. Etofylline also has pharmacokinetic properties, including a rapid absorption in humans and high bioavailability. The drug is eliminated by hepatic metabolism with a half-life of about 7 hours. Etofylline is an analytical method for determining binding constants for hydrogen bonding interactions in biological systems such as proteins, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates. Toxicity studies show that etofylline can cause liver damage and respiratory problems in geriatric patients and pregnant women.</p>
