    <p>Donepezil is a drug that belongs to the class of cholinesterase inhibitors. It is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other central nervous system disorders. Donepezil has been shown to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by binding to its active site. This binding prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine, which leads to an accumulation of this neurotransmitter in the synaptic cleft and an increase in cholinergic activity at nerve junctions. The inhibitor formic acid is formed as a result of the rearrangement of racemic donepezil N-oxide. Donepezil N-oxide can be metabolized by peroxidases or reduced by glutathione reductase, leading to the formation of formic acid, which may contribute to its toxicity.</p>
