Afoxolaner is a bicyclic heterocycle that belongs to the class of insecticides. It is administered orally and has a high bioavailability in rats and dogs. Afoxolaner has been shown to have a pharmacokinetic profile similar to that of the reference drug, deltamethrin, with an effective dose range from 0.1-0.5 mg/kg in rats and dogs. The terminal half-life of afoxolaner is 7 days after oral administration. Afoxolaner is also effective against fleas, ticks, lice, mites, and mosquitoes in animal models and has been shown to be safe for use in cats and dogs at doses up to 1mg/kg (1mg/kg). There are no reports of allergic reactions or cutaneous lesions related to afoxolaner treatment.
