CAS:Metsulfuron methyl is a herbicide that inhibits protein synthesis in plants. It has been shown to be effective against herbicide-resistant plants and can be used for the control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. Metsulfuron methyl is also used for the preparation of plant tissue samples for analysis by immunohistochemistry. The reaction products of metsulfuron methyl are not toxic to animals, but it may cause sublethal effects on some plants. Sublethal doses have been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in plants without causing any observable effects on growth or development. This herbicide has an inhibitory effect on the activity of some enzymes that synthesize fatty acids, which are important components of cell membranes and lipids.
