In particular, they express Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and respond by modulating cytokine expression in response to bacterial strain or lipid exposure. SM-16 cells have also been shown to inhibit tumor growth in mice bearing human leukemia cell lines. SM-16 cells have immunomodulatory effects on both normal human macrophages and on T lymphocyte function.
