CAS :Applications Butylated Hydroxyanisole is an antioxidant consisting of a mixture of two isomers of tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole (1). Butylated Hydroxyanisole is used in food preservation as antioxidant (2) properties prevent food from becoming rancid. Butylated Hydroxyanisoleas is also used in animal feed, petroleum products, and cosmetics. This compound is a contaminant of emerging concern (CECs). Drinking water contaminant candidate list 3 (CCL 3) compound as per United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), environmental, and food contaminants.

CAS :Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used as a food preservative and antioxidant. BHA is an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis, which causes it to have anti-inflammatory properties. It also has been shown to inhibit the production of cytokines and chemokines by inhibiting transcriptional regulation. BHA increases the cytosolic calcium concentration in cells, which leads to enzyme activities such as p450 activity being increased; this inhibition of enzymes slows down the rate at which cells can produce inflammatory molecules. The optimal concentration of BHA for these effects has been found to be 0.2% (w/v).
