Butyrylcholinesterase is a cholinergic enzyme that regulates the production of acetylcholine by catalyzing the hydrolysis of butyrylcholine. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties in vitro and in vivo against voltage-dependent calcium channels, which play a role in neuronal death. Butyrylcholinesterase also inhibits the activity of other enzymes, such as acetylcholinesterase. This enzyme has been found to have antiinflammatory activity and may be an important target for future drug development.
