Are you aware of the new regulations related to PFASs?
In December
2022, the European Community published Regulation (EU) 2022/2388 amending
the former Regulation (EC) 1881/2006affecting the maximum permitted levels
of perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) in various foodstuffs.
This new
law addresses perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid
(PFOA), perfluoronononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid
(PFHxS), different perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) that are or have
been used in numerous commercial and industrial applications. Their widespread
use has led to a widespread presence of these compounds in the environment,
contributing significantly to environmental pollution.
Due to the
presence of these compounds in the environment, through food chains and
bioaccumulation these substances have contaminated food and diet is now the
main source of exposure to PFASs.
Since 2020
it is known that PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS can have developmental effects and
cause adverse effects on serum cholesterol, liver, immune system and birth weight.
For this reason, the new law establishes maximum levels of these compounds in
different foods, in order to ensure that the population does not have a high
exposure to these compounds.
From
CymitQuimica we want to give visibility to the new regulation and remind you
that we have several standards and reagents to perform the analysis and
determine the amount of thesePFAS
substances in the sample.
