Used for selection of ampr transformed cells and to study the role of penicillin-sensitive transpeptidases in cell wall biosynthesis. Carboxypenicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis (peptidoglycan cross-linking) by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane.
