Blasticidin S hydrochloride, acts quickly by inhibiting peptide bond formation by the ribosome. The blasticidin S resistance gene (BSR), found in Bacillus cereus K55-S1, has been used in multiple studies for its use as a selective compound. Resistance is conferred by expression of one of two Blasticidin S deaminase genes: BSD from Aspergillus terreus or bsr from Bacillus cereus. These deaminases convert Blasticidin S to a nontoxic deaminohydroxy derivative. Blasticidin S is used for the prevention of contamination of cell cultures. This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Alfa Aesar product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Alfa Aesar product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.
