The 6-Fluoro-3-indoxyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside is a powerful antituberculosis drug belonging to the class of rifamycins. It is known for its bactericidal activity and effectiveness in treating tuberculosis infections. This active compound inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, preventing transcription and replication. It has been extensively studied using advanced techniques like patch-clamp technique on human erythrocytes. The drug undergoes various metabolic transformations, including hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. Rifapentine also specifically targets markers expressed at high levels in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains, inhibiting cell growth in culture.
