Tretamine is a small molecule that selectively inhibits the enzyme IDO1, which is an immunosuppressant enzyme. It has been shown to inhibit skin cancer and other forms of cancer in animal models, as well as autoimmune diseases in vitro. Tretamine is also used for the treatment of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. This drug can be delivered in nanoparticulate compositions that are designed to target specific cells or tissues. Tretamine has genotoxic effects, which can be demonstrated by its ability to alter DNA replication and repair in human pathogens and tumor cells. Tretamine has been shown to have carcinogenic potential in animal studies with Aerobacter aerogenes.
