Sultiame is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins. It has been shown to have a number of side effects, including metabolic rate, glomerular filtration rate, and bowel disease. Sultiame also has an effect on receptor binding and neuronal death in vitro. Sultiame has been used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease with variable success. It is also used as a diagnostic agent for other diseases related to fatty acid oxidation or inflammatory bowel disease, such as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura or carbonic anhydrase deficiency. It can be used for sample preparation in vitro assays and analytical methods such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry or high-performance liquid chromatography.
