Methyl-1-testosterone is a synthetic anabolic steroid. It has been detected in the urine of humans using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry methods. Methyl-1-testosterone has been shown to increase muscle mass in humans and is used as a dietary supplement. It has also been shown to decrease urinary excretion of Igf-I, which may be due to its ability to block the synthesis of this protein by binding to IGFBP-3 receptors on the cell surface. Methyl-1-testosterone also causes acute kidney injury, which may be due to its ability to inhibit renal prostaglandin synthesis, leading to decreased production of vasodilator nitric oxide.
