Product Information

Name:
Phenazine-1,6-diol
Description:

Phenazine-1,6-diol is a natural product that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against human ovarian carcinoma cells and type strain. Phenazine-1,6-diol is synthesized by the bacterial genus Actinomyces, which are responsible for the production of this drug’s precursor pyocyanine. This drug has also been shown to have antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Phenazine-1,6-diol can be isolated from cultures of Actinomyces sp. The biosynthesis of phenazine-1,6-diol is mediated by copper complexation with fatty acids in the cell membrane of actinomycetes. Phenazines are conjugated with quinoxalines in a reaction catalyzed by enzyme cytochrome P450.
