Description:

1,1,2,2-Tetrabromoethane is a chemical that belongs to the group of brominated flame retardants. It has been shown to be toxic to humans and animals. 1,1,2,2-Tetrabromoethane is also a potent inhibitor of respiratory tract enzymes that are responsible for breaking down hydrogen fluoride (HF). This inhibition causes higher concentrations of HF in the lungs and lower concentrations in other tissues. 1,1,2,2-Tetrabromoethane inhibits viral replication by preventing transcription and translation of the viral genome. The virus can survive only if it enters cells that do not have the enzyme ethylene diamine (ED), which catalyzes the conversion of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane to tetrachloroethene. In addition to its effects on viruses and bacteria, 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane
