Propyl benzenesulfonate is a hydroxylated aromatic compound with a sulfonic acid group that has been shown to be genotoxic. The compound is used in the synthesis of various chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and herbicides. Propyl benzenesulfonate may react with DNA bases to form covalent adducts, which can lead to mutations. It has been shown to cause genotoxic effects in laboratory mice exposed to low levels of light and has been determined as an environmental pollutant that causes DNA damage in aquatic organisms. The chemical structure of propyl benzenesulfonate is characterized using LC-MS/MS methods and it reacts with the electrospray ionization interface during chemical ionization analysis. This results in a fragment ion at m/z = 315 for the molecular ion peak at m/z = 274 (C6H8O3S+).
