Didecyl phthalate is a biocompatible polymer that is used as a coating material for medical devices. It can be dissolved in methanol, ethanol, water, and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Didecyl phthalate has low potency and is not toxic to humans. The polymer is also resistant to degradation by hydrogen fluoride and magnesium salt. Didecyl phthalate has been shown to be effective in preventing the attachment of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, which are responsible for infections following surgery. Monoclonal antibodies against Staphylococcus aureus have been conjugated with didecyl phthalate to create a coating on medical devices that prevents bacterial attachment. This coating has also been shown to be permeable to water vapor.
