1-Naphthalenesulfonic acid is a fluorescent probe that can be used to measure redox potentials. It has been used to study the oxidation of human serum and the titration calorimetry of monosodium salt. 1-Naphthalenesulfonic acid has also been shown to be a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial ATP synthase, with an IC50 value of 0.3 μM. This compound also forms stable complexes with proteins, which may be due to its ability to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds.
