Tetrachlorohydroquinone is a genotoxic agent that is reactive with biological systems. It has been shown to cause cellular transformation and carcinogenic potential in vitro and in vivo. Tetrachlorohydroquinone produces reactive oxygen species, which lead to the formation of lipid peroxidation products, including 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE). These reactions may be responsible for its genotoxic effects. Tetrachlorohydroquinone also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria into the cytosol, which can activate apoptosis pathways. Tetrachlorohydroquinone specifically binds to ribosomes and alters their function, resulting in inhibition of protein synthesis.
