4'-Nitro[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid is a nitrating agent that is used in the organic synthesis of biphenyl. It is prepared by oxidation of 4'-nitrodiphenylsulfone and subsequent reaction with acetic anhydride. The resulting biphenyls may be converted to diamines, which are important in the production of polyamides. The product may also be used as a catalyst to produce polyurethanes. 4'-Nitro[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid can also be synthesized from 4-nitrophenol and acetaldehyde using palladium as a catalyst. This process can also be used for catalytic reduction and polymerization reactions. Hypochlorite and hydrazine are used for the preparation of diamines from biphenols.
