Benzyl isovalerate is a sesquiterpene lactone that has been used as an antimicrobial control agent. It is soluble in both water and organic solvents, such as glycol ethers and alcohols. Benzyl isovalerate has shown to be effective against the growth of bacteria resistant to other agents, and has been used in cosmetic products for its skin conditioning properties. This compound can be prepared by reacting benzyl alcohol with malonic acid and methyl anthranilate under acidic conditions. The chemical structure of benzyl isovalerate can also be derived from the reaction between propionic acid and methyl anthranilate.
