4-(Phenylazo)benzoyl chloride is a cellulose derivative that selectively reacts with fatty alcohols, azobenzene, or uv irradiation. It has been used to prepare chromatographic stationary phases for the separation of fatty acids. In solution, 4-(phenylazo)benzoyl chloride has a high melting point and reacts slowly with hydrochloric acid. This compound also has functional groups that are sensitive to techniques such as hydrolysis or oxidation. 4-Aminophenol is an example of a functional group that cannot be oxidized by this compound.
