Benzyl Formate is a cationic surfactant that has been used as an antimicrobial agent. It is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH2OCH2C6H5. Benzyl formate is soluble in water, glycol ethers, and sodium carbonate. It can be used to produce microcapsules for biological samples and pharmaceutical preparations. In addition, benzyl formate has been shown to be effective against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Benzyl formate also inhibits the growth of gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The hydroxyl group in benzyl formate makes it an effective detergent composition for cleaning surfaces or removing grease from materials.
