Description:

Decylbenzene is a chemical that is used as a solvent, fragrance, and in the manufacture of detergents. It has been shown to have an effect on skin cancer cells when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Decylbenzene reacts with sodium carbonate to produce decylbenzenesulfonate and sodium carbonate. The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet fully understood, but it is known that the rate of reaction increases with temperature. Decylbenzene also has been shown to be thermally unstable, undergoing thermal expansion at higher temperatures. Decylbenzene can be used as a model system to study chemical reactions because it is relatively simple and easy to synthesize.
