Propyl butyrate is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that shows analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory activity. It is used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Propyl butyrate has been shown to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes. It also inhibits the production of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators involved in the pathogenesis of asthma and allergic reactions. Propyl butyrate has been shown to have liver-protective effects due to its ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation and thereby reduce the formation of fatty acid hydroperoxides and reactive oxygen species. The thermodynamic data for propyl butyrate indicates a high energy barrier for oxidation, which makes it difficult for this compound to react with an oxidation catalyst. This suggests that it would be difficult for propyl butyrate to form an intermediate radical during oxidation
