2,6-Dimethyl-5-heptenal is an organic compound that can be synthesized using a two-step process. The first step involves the oxidation of diethyl succinate with sodium hydroxide solution and a catalyst to produce 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptene carboxylic acid. This product is then reacted with methyl anthranilate and diphenyl ether in the presence of a cationic surfactant to produce 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenal. The asymmetric synthesis of this compound has been shown to cause neuronal death by inhibiting gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling.
