Methyl heptanoate is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)7CO2H. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol. Methyl heptanoate has been shown to inhibit bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and hydrogen fluoride-induced lesions in animals. It has also been found to have biological properties that cause it to accumulate in heart tissue after administration, leading to congestive heart failure. In addition, methyl heptanoate has been found to inhibit the release of inflammatory molecules from colon cells after exposure to light. The kinetic and thermodynamic properties of this compound are not well known. Methyl heptanoate reacts with caproic acid in the presence of hydrogen fluoride or light to form methyl octanoate and butyric acid.
