Tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDM) is a film-forming polymer that is used in the manufacturing of ophthalmic drugs. TEGDM is an acrylic monomer, which reacts with two molecules of water to form a hydrated polymer. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless substance. Tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate induces cell growth due to its interactions with growth factors and human serum. Tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate has been shown to be clinically relevant in the prevention of corneal ulcers in diabetic patients who are undergoing laser ablation surgery. The clinical relevance of this drug may be due to its ability to form films on the eye surface, which act as barriers against the effects of laser ablation surgery.
