Methyl 2-nonynoate is a fatty acid that belongs to the group of chemical substances. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the protein geranylgeranyltransferase I, which catalyzes the reaction that converts farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) to geranylgeranylpyrophosphate (GGPP). Methyl 2-nonynoate inhibits this enzyme by covalently binding to the active site and blocking access to the substrate. The inhibition of this enzyme results in decreased production of membrane lipids and proteins. Methyl 2-nonynoate has also been shown to inhibit trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) induced apoptosis in THP-1 cells at low concentrations, while it increases apoptosis at higher concentrations. This effect is mediated by an increase in reactive oxygen species and caspase 3 activity.
