Description

Hexyl ether is a glycol ether with a chemical formula of CH3(CH2)6OCHOCH3. It is a colorless liquid that has an odor reminiscent of ether. Hexyl ether is used for wastewater treatment and as a solvent in the production of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Hexyl ether is also used to prepare samples for detection by fluorescence spectroscopy. The matrix effect of hexyl ether can be seen through its ability to suppress the fluorescence signal from aromatic compounds such as tricyclic antidepressant drugs and radiation, which are often present in sample preparations. Hexyl ether reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form hydrogen hexafluoropropane and ethylene oxide.
