Oxytocin is a peptide hormone that is important for the initiation of childbirth and milk release. It was first isolated from porcine hypothalamus, but is now synthesized commercially. Oxytocin has been shown to have locomotor activating properties in rats and to stimulate bowel motility. This drug has also been found to be effective in treating autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, oxytocin has been shown to have beneficial effects in clinical settings for patients with bowel disease or impaired blood clotting. Oxytocin also has anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, which may be due to its ability to bind the G-protein coupled receptor known as GPR30.
