2-Butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol (BEP) is a substance that has been found in maternal blood and the testes. It is a metabolite of dihydroxyacetone phosphate, which is involved in glycolysis. BEP was first identified as a specific marker for the kidney glomerulus by measuring its concentration in the urine of healthy volunteers. It can be used to measure renal function and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The long-term efficacy and toxicity of this drug have not been investigated.
