Description

1-Phenylethyl propionate is a skin-care agent that belongs to the class of antimicrobial agents. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. 1-Phenylethyl propionate is also used in pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of acne, rosacea, and erythrasma. The compound has been shown to be an effective bactericide against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, both common causes of acne. In addition, it inhibits the growth of fungi that cause dermatitis such as candida albicans. The mechanism by which 1-phenylethyl propionate exerts its antimicrobial activity is unclear but may involve a cationic surfactant or chemical interactions with fatty acids or polymers on cell membranes.
