2,6,8-Trimethyl-4-nonanol is a ketone that is used as an additive in the production of polyurethanes. It has two stereoisomers, threo and erythro. The mixture of these two stereoisomers yields a racemic mixture. 2,6,8-Trimethyl-4-nonanol reacts with ethylene oxide to form nonionic surfactants that are used in detergents and other cleaning products. 2,6,8-Trimethyl-4-nonanol can be synthesized by reacting methyl isobutyl ketone with hydrogen at a pressure of 500 psi and a temperature of 140°C. A label is added to trace the production process.
2,6,8-Trimethyl-4-nonanol is used as an additive for the production of polyurethanes because it increases their yield by reducing the amount of isobutyl needed for a reaction.
