±-iso-Methylionone is a chemical that can be used as a preservative in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It has been reported to have clinical relevance and is known to cause allergic reactions. The most common form of ±-iso-Methylionone is the cis form, which has been shown to suppress eugenol production by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme alkoxy radical. In addition, ±-iso-Methylionone has been shown to inhibit radiation induced DNA damage in cells. This chemical is stable under alkaline conditions, but not acidic conditions. A study using Sprague Dawley rats found that ±-iso-Methylionone was absorbed through the skin after topical administration. This chemical can also be detected using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with high sensitivity and resolution.
±-iso-Methylionone has also been studied for its use as an analytical method for quantifying benzoates, diethyl succinate,
