N,N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline is a nitrosating agent that reacts with anhydrous sodium to form sodium nitrite. It is used in the treatment of skin cancer and can be applied topically or injected. N,N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline has been shown to cause neuronal death in animal models. This agent has also been shown to react with acid and form hydrogen gas and nitric oxide, which are reactive molecules that can react with DNA and proteins. N,N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline is not carcinogenic to humans but has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal models.
