Cerium oxalate is a compound that contains an oxide of the metal cerium and oxalate. It can be synthesized by reacting cerium nitrate with sodium oxalate, or as a hydrated form of cerium oxide. Cerium oxalate has been used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for determining the presence of chloride ions in water vapor, which is commonly found in natural gas processing plants. The chemical stability of this compound has been studied using kinetic measurements and it was found that it is relatively stable to hydrolysis, but less stable to oxidation. Sodium citrate and hydrogen fluoride are two chemicals that can be used to produce this compound.
