Furaltadone is a nitrofuran-derivative that inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid in the bacteria. It has been shown to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease and infectious diseases, including tuberculosis. Furaltadone can be used as an antibacterial agent in animal feed, but should not be used in human food or animal feed for which folic acid is a dietary requirement.
