6-Chloro-1,4-dihydro-2,3-quinoxalinedione is a chemical compound that is used as an antipsychotic drug. It is also a structural analog of the neurotransmitter glutamate and has been shown to modulate NMDA receptors. 6-Chloro-1,4-dihydro-2,3-quinoxalinedione binds to the GluR5 subunit of the NMDA receptor with high affinity and blocks its activity. This binding prevents calcium ions from entering the neuron in response to glutamate stimulation. The GluR5 subunit functions as a sensor for glutamate and provides for rapid excitation of the neuron following release of this neurotransmitter at synapses.
