Spiro[indoline-3,4'-piperidine] is a lead compound that has been shown to have antidepressant effects. It is an n-substituted indoline that binds to the acetylcholine receptor and inhibits the uptake of serotonin in the brain, which may have a role in its antidepressant effects. Spiro[indoline-3,4'-piperidine] also has solvates in water and hydrates at low temperatures. The emission spectrum of this compound is similar to that of positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracers for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
